My English teacher used to be strict

Hello Students!

OK so today started off with a technological disaster! Here are the videos I would have shown you if we had had sound...

Matilda (1996)

Dead Poets Society (1989)

What are the differences between the two teachers? Which teacher would you prefer to have? Which of the adjectives below could you use to describe the teachers in the clips?

We talked about different forms of the same words and the endings which are usually specific to certain types of words.

We looked at the noun endings

-tion / sion / cian (solution, decision, musician)
-ment (enjoyment, excitement)
-dom (freedom, wisdom)
-ance / ence (finance, absence)

...and the adjective endings

-ing (amazing, frightening)
-ed (surprised, inspired) note: 'ed' ending adjectives are often feelings / emotions
-ive (creative, obsessive)
-able (fashionable, impressionable)

Can you think of some more words with these endings? Take a look at this website for some help and to discover some cool new words.

After break we looked at some grammar, 'used to' and 'would'. Here is the board...

Remember: We use 'used to' and 'would' for repeated actions which happened in the past but do not happen now.

'I would visit my grandma every weekend when I was a child'
'They used to go to church every Sunday before they stopped believing in God'

We only use 'used to' for feelings or states in the past that are not true now.

'I used to hate my little brother now now I love him!'

When we ask questions or make negatives we use 'use to' (without 'd')

'Did you use to wet the bed when you were a child?'
'I didn't use to live in London, I am originally from Wales.'

I have given you a worksheet for homework which we will correct tomorrow. Have a great night!
