Hello lovely students and welcome to my brand new shiny teaching blog! Here you can (hopefully!) review work we did in class, view your homework assignments and more!
Let's start with today's class, Friday February 8th 2013. Today you took your weekly test and we studied adverbs. Here are the rules...
We use adverbs to describe verbs. For example,
The teacher is angry (noun + to be + adjective)
Here angry describes the teacher.
The teacher shouts angrily (noun + verb + adverb)
Here angrily describes the shouting.
Some more examples...
George studies lazily and forgets his homework regularly
Here lazily describes studying and regularly describes forgetting.
Louise ate quickly and messily while her boyfriend watched her disgustedly
Here quickly and messily describe eating and disgustedly describes watching.
There are some rules to remember when you are making adverbs...
Most adjectives = add ly
strong = strongly
jealous = jealously
mysterious = mysteriously
Adjectives ending in le = take away the e and add y
Comfortable = comfortably
fashionable = fashionably
Enjoyable = enjoyably
Adjectives ending in y = take away the y and add ily
Happy = happily
Crazy = crazily
Hungry = hungrily
Remember... some adjectives do NOT change when they are used as adverbs, for example,
Hard
Diamonds are very hard stones (hard = adjective)
Terri hit Jane hard on the nose (hard = adverb)
Fast
Lilly is a very fast runner (fast = adjective)
The cat moved fast when the dog arrived (fast = adverb)
Another tip... the adverb for good is well.
I am a good driver (good = adjective)
I drive well (well = adverb)
For homework this weekend I have asked you to watch this youtube clip of my favourite British soap opera Eastenders. I have given you a transcript of the scene along with some questions.
This homework is due on Monday. Have a great weekend!
